UK guidelines state that older adults, who are generally active and have no health conditions that limit their mobility, should try to be active daily and over the course of a week should do:
- At least 150 minutes of *Moderate intensity aerobic activity (in bouts of more than 10 minutes at a time)
- Muscle strengthening activities on 2 or more days a week that work all major muscle groups (legs, hips, back, abdomen, chest, shoulders and arms).
*Moderate-intensity activity will:
- Raise your heart rate
- Make you breathe faster
- Make you feel warmer
Daily chores such as shopping, cooking or housework don’t count towards your 150 minutes because the effort isn’t hard enough to raise your heart rate, but they are important however as they break up periods of inactivity.
Our ‘Mature Movers’ class helps you to achieve these recommendations of physical activity by combining exercises to strengthen the major muscles as well as exercises that get the aerobic system going.
The class aims to improve your overall fitness, flexibility, balance and co-ordination in a fun, friendly, class environment.
All abilities are welcome. Some use the class as a starting point to being more active, others use it as a simple way of assisting to fulfill their exercise target for the week.
NB: If you are thinking of joining us it’s a good idea to talk to your GP first, just to check everything is ok for you to participate and enjoy the class fully
